So why not listen to some cool music "down by the riverside?"
by Anne Vargas
Few Reno-area settings are as intimate and serene for live music as Sierra Water Gardens, along the Truckee River at 2110 Dickerson Road – a somewhat isolated street west of Keystone Avenue that runs close to the Truckee River.
Sutter and Samantha Stremmel own Sierra Water Gardens, a boutique nursery that sells pond equipment and supplies, terrariums and air plants, colorful Koi fish and other goods for people seeking placid landscapes.
They knew their back lot with its ponds, water lilies, exotic trees and succulents would be perfect for staging local music shows in favorable weather so in 2013 they began a weekend music series from spring through fall.
The response was enthusiastic and the series has continued every Saturday night from May through October with different bands performing on the deck every week. The Garden is small, so space is limited, which makes for an intimate concert and the focus is on the music. Attendees, including families, typically bring food, libations and blankets or lawn chairs to arrange on the lawn and gravel. The music begins at 6 and ends at 8 p.m. (There is also a food stand serving crepes made to order.)
Tickets are $10 a person (with an occasional $15 charge). The night we went the performers, Canyons, were superb (if you ever have a chance to hear them, do!), the crowd was delighted and the setting was enchanting. We wondered why we hadn't been there before; we'll definitely go back.
Address: 2110 Dickerson Road (the west end of 2nd. Street turns into Dickerson). Live music is scheduled through October 10th. Check their website for a list of performers: sierrawatergardens. com or phone 775-324-7712.
